Can I take this with antidepressants or other serotonergic drugs?
No. Do not use methylene blue with any SSRI, SNRI, MAOI, tricyclic antidepressant, lithium, or other serotonergic medication. Methylene blue is a potent MAO inhibitor and the combination can cause serotonin syndrome, a potentially life-threatening reaction. The FDA issued a Drug Safety Communication on this in 2011. Talk to your prescriber or pharmacist first.
Who should not use this?
Anyone taking a serotonergic medication; people with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency; anyone pregnant or nursing; people with kidney impairment; and anyone under 18. If in doubt, ask a physician before use.
What exactly is in the bottle?
A USP-grade 1% methylene blue (methylthioninium chloride) solution — 10 mg per 1 mL (about 20 drops) in a 60 mL dropper bottle. The only other ingredients are water and potassium sorbate. It is formaldehyde-free.
Why will my mouth and urine turn blue?
Methylene blue is a deep blue dye. Temporary blue-green coloring of the mouth, urine and stool is expected and passes as the compound is cleared.
Is it third-party tested?
Yes — every production lot is tested by an independent ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratory for identity, contaminants, heavy metals and microbials, and the certificate is available by lot number. Third-party testing is not the same as displaying a certification mark, which we do not claim.
Does this product have health benefits?
We make no health or performance claims for this product. Methylene blue is an actively researched compound, but we have not run a trial on this product and will not tell you it is proven to do anything.
